I’m an introvert, and I despise open floorplan. Yet, I am likely the most collaborative team member on my team, and I actively encourage collaboration. How can this be?

Well, I don’t like sitting at my desk while colleagues chatter about the weather, etc. nearby. When I am not collaborating on a team, or going to lunch to talk about the weather, I want silence and some sense of solitude. Even within that solitude, I can chat across a chat program with colleagues to keep the collaboration up. I’m also very happy to have teamwork occur in phases in a conference room.

But the constant feeling others are around and are socializing around me when I’m focusing is dissonant to my aims as an introvert and a focused employee.
