The Hulk vs. Loki fight you describe is the choice for superhero movies: make the hero likable because she has an inner conflict she resolves, or make the hero likable because he solves problems with violence, not words, against a horde of CGI creatures which resemble those people he hates precisely because he cannot imagine them having inner conflicts and selves.
I vote for superhero movies which are interested in self-conflict and narrative; Marvel votes another way. Maybe in 50 years, these heroes can be retconned with actual selves and their villains can also have actual selves.
